The Challenge

At Etex’s Ferrybridge manufacturing site, loading operations brought pedestrians and forklifts into the same working area.

People needed access beside loading vehicles, including when leaving truck cabs and securing loads. Forklift drivers needed a clear indication that someone was present before entering those areas.

The challenge was to communicate that changing risk while allowing loading operations to continue. Light entering through the loading doors also made projection visibility an important consideration.

Our Approach

Working from the loading-bay layout and pedestrian activity, WSS developed a solution that would:

  • Detect people within defined loading-bay risk zones
  • Give approaching forklift drivers a clear visual warning
  • Link warning activation to pedestrian presence
  • Account for the lighting conditions at the loading doors

What We Delivered

WSS supplied and installed an integrated warning system combining projected safety markings and AI pedestrian detection.

The primary solution was the installation of Projected Safety Markings. These display Etex-branded forklift prohibition symbols on the floor, positioned to communicate the warning to drivers approaching the loading areas.

The projections were linked to AI camera systems. The cameras detect pedestrians within designated zones and activate the projected warnings. Following installation, WSS replaced the projectors to address visibility in sunlight and contacted Etex to check their performance.

Results & What’s Next

The finished system provides a visible warning linked to pedestrian presence in the loading-bay detection zones.

Following the projector replacement, Daniel Robinson confirmed that the lights were performing as required. He subsequently thanked WSS for getting the system up and running and asked to tag the company in a LinkedIn post about the installation.

The project brought together:

  • Pedestrian detection within defined loading-bay zones
  • Automatic warning activation linked to a person entering the detection area
  • Visible forklift prohibition signs projected directly onto the floor
  • Practical aftercare with projector replacement and customer follow-up on sunlight visibility
“

Thank you both for your help in getting these lights up and running, they are fantastic thank you.
